The rate of penetration general equation is optimized for effective functions at each data point. A model is developed for this purpose using actual field data collected through modern well monitoring and data recording systems, which predicts the rate of drilling penetration as a function of available parameters. An extensive literature survey on drilling optimization was conducted for this research study. A statistical method such as multiple linear regression technique has been used for the drilling optimization. The process is considered to be formation specific. Real-time optimization of drilling parameters during drilling operations aims to optimize weight on bit, bit rotation speed for obtaining maximum drilling rate as well as minimizing the drilling cost. The collected data could then be run through methodology set for hydraulic pressure calculation and a comparison could be performed regarding the validity of the parameters being used. Related drilling data can be collected online not only from a single drilling site but from a set of drilling sites. This methodology can also be implemented on a real-time basis. This improvement would increase the accuracy of the estimation envelope. To increase the scope of this study drilling hydraulic pressure observations from other wells can also be included. This valuable information would assist to perform a better well design and it might also help to develop strategies for effective drilling plans in future applications. The input for this study resulted in creation of a database of drilling parameters.

If the actual drilling hydraulic pressure value is not in the range of ☒5% of theoretical drilling hydraulic pressure then an under or over observed pressure loss might indicate a problem. This prediction of pressure value was compared with the actual pressure value and observation revealed a match within ☒5% of an estimation envelope. A theoretical methodology that considers the drilling fluid as Bingham Plastic was utilized to predict the frictional pressure losses along the tubular equipment and wellbore annulus. The wells taken into account for this study are land and offshore jack up wells including directional wells. A case study that compares the actual and theoretical hydraulic pressure as a result of frictional pressure losses along well bores drilled in Turkey was conducted.
