Freestyle Games has cast aside the familiar five-button controllers for a new peripheral that offers two rows of three frets.

This is where Guitar Hero Live shines, and it's largely thanks to another new innovation. It's worth noting that an Internet connection is required to access this content, and it's very much the bulk of the game. GHTV is a streaming service with a far broader library, and it's likely what most players will be keen to spend most of their time with. The Live portion of the game is simply a small segment of what's on offer, though. Given that the game comes from the developers of DJ Hero, the charts do them justice, but they're largely quite simplistic in terms of difficulty. Sets are typically comprised of radio-friendly hits, rather than the rock that one might expect to find in a Guitar Hero game. The Live portion of the game loosely resembles previous entries in its linear progression from one venue to another, with several songs offered by each section - but the tracks on offer aren't the best in the game as a whole. However, players won't be in first-person for as much of their time with Guitar Hero Live as they might expect. There's certainly an aspect of cheesiness as well, but somehow the whole thing works. There's something about looking out over a sea of fans that's undeniably engaging, and there's enough detail in each performance to keep providing new things to look at as gamers replay songs. The game came with 42 songs on the disc and 200 songs in the GHTV collection new content is released to GHTV every week via premium shows that give players unique incentives. It's silly, but it's fun. GHTV allows users to pick up and play currently-streamed music at any time or to pay money and in-game credits to play any song in the library instead of relying on traditional downloadable material. Songs on GHTV are delivered with the note track on top of their music video or live concert footage. FreeStyleGames also wanted to avoid the traditional downloadable content model when it came to adding new songs to the game, so they developed the GHTV mode, which includes curated playlists in the style of music television channels that are streamed around the clock, allowing them to acquire and add new songs easily. Activision gave FreeStyleGames complete reign to rejuvenate the franchise, which resulted in the development of a new guitar controller with a 6-button, 3-fret configuration, as opposed to the 5-button controller of prior games.įreeStyleGames also wanted to give the player a more immersive experience, so they designed the main career mode GH Live to display the note pattern atop full-motion video taken from the perspective of a lead guitarist during a concert, with the crowd and other band members dynamically reacting to the player’s performance. Activision wanted to bring back Guitar Hero for the next generation of video game systems, but the new game had to be unique.

The game is a relaunch of the Guitar Hero franchise, and it is the first new entry in the series since Warriors of Rock in 2010 and the eighth overall. The purpose of this game, like with previous ones in the series, is to utilize a special guitar controller to match fret patterns presented on-screen, scrolling note patterns in time with the music. Guitar Hero Live is a music video game produced by Activision and created by FreeStyleGames.
